Unagiya Ichinoji 鳗家一の字 - 125 Years Old Unagi Restaurant from Tokyo

If you have been following my blog, you know that I have been on a unagi craze for the past few weeks.   I have already been to Man   Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant,   Una Una,   Unaemon   and   Uya Japanese Unagi Restaurant. The last unagi restaurant on my list is Unagi Ichinoji.   Unagi Ichinoji originated from Tokyo, Japan. This unagi speciality restaurant has been around for 125 years and it is known as Miyagawa Hoten in Japan. The Singapore outlet at Robertson Quay is their first overseas outlet.  Unagi Ichinoji can be a little tricky to find. I walked around Village Residence Roberson Quay twice before I finally found the place. Look out for the signage that says “Village Residence Robertson Quay” between Italian restaurant Mondo Mio and Japanese restaurant Amazing Hokkaido.  Unagi Ichinoji’s black-colored exterior shows understated elegance. Black wooden panel and glass sliding doors merges traditional Japanese elements with contem...

Uya Japanese Unagi Restaurant 四代目菊川

Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant   was the first restaurant that introduced me to the wonderful world of unagi don.  I have been on a unagi don spree for the past few weeks. I have tried   Una Una,   Unaemon   and now I am going on to the forth restaurant, Uya Japanese Unagi Restaurant 四代目菊川。 Located on the 2nd level of Wheelock Place, I was pleasantly surprised by the entrance of Uya Japanese Unagi Restaurant.  The bamboo panel and wooden cashier counter are angled with white Japanese curtains that leads you into the restaurant. An eel is projected to be swimming on the floor.  The interior is just as beautifully decorated with a wooden partition that separates the private rooms from the rest of the restaurant.  I especially like sitting at the communal table surrounding a fake autumn leave tree. It really makes me feel like I am enjoying momijigari (autumn leave viewing) in Japan.  The menu is written in Japanese with English translat...

Unaemon - Unagi Restaurant with More Than 150 Years of History

If you have been following my website regularly, you will realize that I am on a unagi craze right now.  I had my first taste of unagi at   Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant   a few years ago. I decided to try another unagi restaurant   Una Una   and now I am onto my third unagi restaurant.  The first Unaemon was established in 1950 in Japan and Singapore is their first overseas expansion.  This restaurant is especially difficult to locate. I walked around the whole Capital Square 3 times before I finally managed to find the place. Look out for PRONTO, the Japanese-Italian cafe. To the right of it is a car park, Unaemon is located opposite the car park.  The wooden interior design and wooden shelve lined with sake bottles gives the restaurant a very sophisticated feel.  I was given a small chawanmushi, complimentary on the house.  I am here for the   Hitumabushi   [S$26.50 for Half (Small), S$39.50 for Regular (Full)].  Th...

Xiao Yao Ge 逍遥阁 - Northeastern, Sichuan and BBQ Restaurant

I decided one day that I want to start a healthy lifestyle so I walked from Bukit Batok to Chinese Garden. There is a slew of Chinese restaurants underneath the HDB block diagonally opposite the Chinese Garden MRT station and one of them is Xiao Yao Ge 逍遥阁.  Xiao Yao Ge 逍遥阁 specializes in Northeastern Chinese, Sichuan dishes and BBQ. The dining area upstairs with seating capacity of 10-20 people even allows you to sing karaoke while dining. Xiao Yao Ge 逍遥阁 is the only restaurant in the west with such facilities.  There are well over 150 dishes to choose from, there is something for everyone. If don’t can’t read the ordering form that is all written in Chinese, refer to the menu which has beautiful images and English translations. There is a wide variety of barbecue food available, from vegetables to meats to seafood.  The presentation is not that nice, all the grilled items are thrown onto one plate. There is   Grill Fresh Mutton   烤羊肉串  [S$1 per stick], ...

Una Una - New Unagi Restaurant in Bugis+ Offers Unagi for Just $9.80

It has been some time since I last had unagi at   Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant .   I have been craving for unagi and I found out on the Burpple app that a new unagi restaurant has opened in Bugis+.   I can’t wait to try it out. Let’s go!    Una Una is located besides Ramen Champion on level 4 of Bugis+.  There is a glass tank at the entrance of the restaurant where live freshwater eel is kept. The eels are flown in from Japan, which shows the restaurant’s dedication to quality which is commendable.  Someone recommended this   Unagi Omelette   (3 pieces) [S$9.80] on Burpple so I got a portion. I would never have thought to combine unagi and omelette together, but it actually works. There is way more omelette than unagi in each piece, but you can defiantly taste the unagi.  Hitsumabushi is Nagoya style of cooking freshwater eel. The eel are coated with a special basting tare that is flown in from Japan and grilled over charcoal. The g...
