Tempura TENTEN - New Japanese Restaurant at Raffles City Shopping Centre Serves Awesome Tendon

 Tempura TENTEN

Tempura TENTEN is a new Japanese restaurant at the basement of Raffles City Shopping Centre that has taken over the spot previously occupied by Daikoukuya. Tempura TENTEN specializes in tendon and ramen.

The restaurant is decked out in earthy hues complete with wooden tables and chairs. Seats are pretty limited, so it can get really crowded during lunch and dinner. So come down early to avoid long waiting time.

This is the Tempura TENTEN’s original tendon, known as Special Tendon [$13.80]. There may be slight variations, but it’s normally 2 pieces of prawn tempura, shiitake mushroom, seaweed tempura, long bean tempura, pumpkin tempura, bacon tempura and a piece of cheesy chicken tempura which is really the highlight of this tendon dish. I like that the tempura is fried fresh upon order, coupled with fragrant Japanese rice from Hokkaido and sweet tendon sauce, makes for a tasty meal that you will come back to again and again.

For those who want something, a little special can opt for Unattended [$19.80] where a piece of prawn tempura is swapped with a whole piece of grilled eel. The eel is well-marinated with sweet soy sauce and grilled till slightly charred on the outside.

I like the Special Tendon and Unattended but the Jumbo Prawn Tendon [$24.80, limited to 10 bowls a day] takes the cake. It’s much more expensive than the rest, but you get three huge prawns, each one bigger than the length of my hand. The body of the prawns is coated in a light layer of batter and fried till crispy. Each bite fills your whole mouth with the delicious sweetness of the juicy meat. The prawn heads are so thoroughly fried, it’s almost like eating prawn crackers (albeit very expensive prawn crackers).

I had a bowl of yuzu ramen in Japan and the lingering fragrance of yuzu left a lasting impression on me. Not many restaurants in Singapore sells yuzu ramen so I was really excited to try Tempura TENTEN’s Yuzu Chashu Ramen [$14.80], but I am greatly disappointed. The light chicken broth is paired with 3 slices of pork chashu, chopped spring onions, two halves of flavoured egg, marinated lemon rind and a dollop of citrus sauce. The pork chashu is rather tough and the long, straight and thin noodles tasted a little chalky and do not go well with the chicken broth. Add in the citrus sauce sparingly, it is really salty and adding the whole thing into your broth will destroy your ramen.

Tendon, Vegetable Kakiage Tendon and Unadon are available for takeaway. Takeaways can be pre-ordered with the new cutQ app.

Comparing Tempura TENTEN to the popular Tempura Kokaku in Suntec City, I prefer Tempura TENTEN’s tendon which is not as oily and the tendon sauce is not drizzled on top of the tempura making them a little soggy.

PAUL

PAUL is a renowned family French bakery and patisserie founded in 1889. Bringing with them them the fine tradition of passion for food and French traditions, PAUL gives Singaporeans a glimpse into French culture and tradition through the delicious and visually-appealing pastries and food.       PAUL's Hot Chocolate is not as creamy as I would have liked it but every last drop is made with good-quality cocoa powder.     Lemon Tart With Meringue is not exactly my favourite dessert, but it looked so pretty that I decided to give it a try anyway. However, it proved to be too sour for my palette even with the beautifully flamed meringue.    Croque Madame is croque-monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich) topped with a fried egg. Emmental cheese, cream and ham is sandwich in pain de eie and toasted till a rich golden brown colour.                         Korean bingsu is a popular Korean dessert comprising of ice shavings and various ingredients such as sweetened condensed milk, fruit syrups, fresh fruits, Korean rice cake and ice-cream. Bingsu is all the craze in Singapore now and Korean bingsu cafes are popping up everywhere like wild mushrooms.                            Besides bingsu, this dessert cafe also serves usual cafe offerings such as coffee and tea. I have been told that their Signature Oven-Baked Honey Bread is very good. The flavours include Strawberry & Chocolate with Ice Cream, Banana & Chocolate with Ice Cream and Green Tea with Ice Cream.     I was told that   Mango Cheesecake Bingsu   is one of the most popular item on the menu. Oh my, it is a sight to behold! A bowl of shaved ice is topped with sweetened condensed milk and freshly-cut m...

Grandma's - Authentic Singapore Food

Grandma's has been around for quite a while now but I only got the chance to try their food recently when the third outlet opened in Suntec City.        I remember having these prawn crackers when I was little. They are so easy and good to eat, I can finish a whole package of this in one sitting.     I don't usually order Malay food, but the Nasi Bukhari looked so good in the menu, I thought I will give it a try. Fragrant yellow turmeric rice is served with golden brown chicken leg which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Prawns were fresh and succulent but I don't really like the sauce the prawns are cooked in. What really amazes me about this dish is the beef rendang.          I never knew Bo Bo Cha Cha is so such a delightful dessert until I tried it here at Grandma's. The warm and thick coconut tastes so good with chunks of sweet potato and yam. This is definitely comfort food that warms the heart.   Gr...
